TIP OF THE WEEK: Orientation Advice For Parents

If at any time during orientation you notice that you’re the only adult in a room filled with hundreds of students, get out of the room (a worthy use of bold). If you happen to see a few other parents in that room, most likely they are professionals or other parents who need to leave the room. Even if your kid wants you to stick around during the academic advising session, tell your student you’ll meet up with him or her later. Every time I do orientation programs I see lingering parents who think they blend into the crowd. You don’t. We see you. Even if you are wearing the same shirt and pants as your daughter (yes, this happens too).

A funny addition to this - I was at an event the other day presenting to students during summer orientation. In the middle of my show, I asked students to raise their hands if they had received a text message from their parents during my presentation. Nearly two-thirds raised their hands. I asked them to keep their hands up if they texted back. About 90 percent kept their hands in the air. So, if you need to communicate with your child during orientation, you might want to look at his schedule and hold off texting if the text can wait. This will be good practice for when your child is in class and feel the need to text during class...
